Behind the scenes at Brent Archives…
For the past two weeks, I have been at Brent Archives gaining some work experience in an archive environment. Having previously only ever been on the other side of the counter when it comes to archive collections, these past weeks have revealed a different side to the whole process of researching, cataloguing and obtaining archive material whether it be for the use of local historians, exhibitions in the museum or as part of someone’s academic research.
There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that I was never aware of before…
I had never considered how information appears online or in a catalogue or even seen how an archive store room is organised. Well, this fortnight gave me valuable insight!
I have spent my time exploring a bit of Brent’s local history, reading about how to look after archive materials properly so they are conserved and can still be used for many, many years and cataloguing collections. I worked mostly with the North collection, detailing the ins and outs of the Willesden Parish and the Poor Law in the 19th Century, which I found very interesting. I also spent time cataloguing the records from the Harlesden Labour Club and Institute, which led me onto some great information about industry in Brent, I never knew there used to be a Heinz factory here!
Cataloguing has been a great way to initiate me into working with archives, plus I get to be nosy and read about the past lives of Brent residents! I now understand a lot more about what it means to be an archivist (something I hope to achieve one day!) and have really enjoyed my time at Brent.
Thank you to Kate, Sorcha, Ros and Malcom for showing me the ropes and giving me lots of advice!

Would be interested in your info on Harlesden Labour Club
Hi Christine
Harlesden Labour Club and Institution Ltd. was a working men’s club situated at 137 High Street, Harlesden, NW10. The club records run from 1915 continuing through to 1982. The club was affiliated with the Working Mens Club and Institute Union Ltd. The club was a licensed premises and provided entertainment, games and a benevolent fund for its members.
The new catalogue listing which Katy has been working on during her work experience placement will be going online during the next live catalogue update this week or next. In the meantime, the new paper catalogue is available at Brent Archives (and I will email a copy to you), and you can visit the archives to view any of the records that are of interest. Visit our website at http://www.brent.gov.uk/archives for information on opening times etc.
Best wishes
