Celebrating Chinese Heritage in Brent

Shared City CIC’s Chinese Heritage Project shines a light on the long, rich, and often overlooked history of Chinese communities in London — with a special focus on the people, places, and stories rooted in the borough of Brent.
Through community research, storytelling, and guided heritage walks, the project explores how Chinese migrants have shaped local culture, cuisine, and commerce. It brings to life not only the iconic establishments that once defined the area but also the personal stories of families who helped build and sustain vibrant neighbourhoods.
Among the stories uncovered is that of Kuo Yuan, the pioneering Chinese restaurant on Willesden High Road, believed to be the first in the UK to serve Peking duck. The project also highlights the achievements of community figures such as Dr Etheldreda Kong, a local councillor and advocate for inclusion, and families like the Lees and Yips, whose businesses became cultural cornerstones for generations of Londoners.
Visitors can explore an interactive digital map showcasing key people, places, and moments in Chinese history across Brent and beyond — offering a deeper understanding of how migration, identity, and community intertwine.
This project forms part of Shared City’s wider mission to celebrate London’s cultural diversity and foster connection between communities through shared heritage experiences.
