30 Years of Democracy in South Africa

A new exhibition at The Library at Willesden Green.

18 October to 20 December 2024.

As South Africa marks 30 years since its first democratic election, this exhibition reflects on Brent’s significant role in the anti-apartheid movement.

A part of the ‘Becoming Brent’ project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, this initiative explores the legacies of colonialism, coinciding with the centenary of the British Empire Exhibition held in Wembley Park in 1924 and 1925.

This local heritage is presented alongside the work of South African artist Garth Erasmus, who explores decolonisation as a central theme. His work challenges dominant and exclusionary narratives of African and “coloured” identity within the South African context.
